Peruvian coffees are grown very high in the Andes Mountains. This exceptional altitude creates a coffee with bright effervescent snap, gentle sweetness, and nice medium body. Peru is an excellent origin for organic coffees, due to the hard work of a few exporters/importers in getting the farms and the mills up to organic standards.
Our Organic Peru La Florida comes from the enormously successful La Florida Cooperative, founded in 1965 by a group of 100 small-scale coffee farmers from the Chanchamayo region. Today, the La Florida Cooperative has over two thousand farmer-members who work together to improve the quality of their coffee and to benefit their communities. The revenue from their Fair Trade sales has brought education, infrastructure, credit, and environmental consciousness to this rural area. The coop established The Occupational Learning Center for Sustainable Agriculture and provides technical assistance and training in environmentally-friendly farming techniques. The Coop additionally funds and provides healthcare services, builds and maintains roads and bridges, portable water systems and schools, and has purchased machinery and land to assist with coffee production. In 2005, La Florida won 6th place in Peru’s National Coffee Quality Competition.
